Energy Efficient Projects

The Verizon Services Organizatons (VSO) Energy Team issued Target Building Advisory Guidelines for use nationwide. Verizon Team Energy is a nationwide leadership team charged with developing policies and programs designed to reduce energy use and develop sustainable energy options for the future. The guidelines purpose is to support Real Estate Operations by:

• Providing consistent and standard no/low cost strategies to reduce building energy use.
• Assisting building operators in reducing energy consumption through implementation of low/no cost measures.
• Soliciting potential energy savings projects and facilitation their inclusion in the capital energy budget

In September 2005, Verizon announced that it has built and is now operating the largest fuel cell project of its kind in the country (in Garden City, NY), using environmentally friendly devices to supply electric power at a large call-switching center and office buildings here.

Energy Purchase

The VSO Energy Team and Corporate Sourcing are successfully working together to use Verizon's enormous energy 'buy' as leverage to reduce prices in both regulated and unregulated markets. As state laws change and electric utility competition expands, this joint venture has negotiated and executed several new contracts to purchase electricity at reduced rates.

Communications

The VSO energy communications plan provides for communication of our energy conservation methods throughout the company. The Energy Conservation Team uses all available corporate communications mediums to educate and encourage employees to conserve energy in their daily work routines to reduce cost and protect the environment.

Real Estate & Network Operations

Teams audit energy use in buildings, reviews energy operations in the most wasteful buildings, and implements energy savings projects and programs. Over 18,000 energy conservation projects have been completed. Energy audits are conducted to insure compliance with company temperature, illumination and core operating hour standards.

Corporate Energy Policy:

It is the policy of Verizon to be committed to preserving natural resources and to adhere to responsible environmental business practices. The Company is dedicated to preserving resources that produce the energy that is required to heat, cool, light and power Verizon's communications network and building facilities.

Verizon will seek out and deploy new alternative energy producing technologies and energy conserving building and telecommunications equipment.

In support of this policy Verizon will require that its’ employees and suppliers demonstrate a commitment to conserving energy. Employees will be accountable in the workplace to use energy responsibly and minimize waste without compromising service to our customers. Suppliers of energy consuming equipment will be asked to design and produce energy efficient products.
