Fleet Reduction and Special Initiatives
Verizon's Fleet in NJ has more than 6900 units. This includes 6400 vehicles and
500 trailers.
Verizon continues to analyze its need for fleet vehicles and has undertaken special
initiatives to reduce fuel consumption beyond reducing fleet size.
Even though there has been an increase in number of miles driven and fuel
consumption, Verizon has introduced a reduced idiling program
throughout its footprint, including New Jersey.
There is a total of 100 Hybrid cars throughout the Verizon footprint.
Nineteen will be added to New Jersey's fleet by December 2007, which brings the total
Hybrid fleet to 24.
Verizon has invested heavily in the development of a state-of-the art computer
program for the assignment and routing of its service technicians. This system
prioritizes customer needs, customer location and technician location on a
constant basis and can route and re-route to achieve efficiencies. Using this
system, all Verizon fleet vehicles, such as vans and bucket trucks, have
computer terminals for work assignments and job routing. In addition,
technicians also are able to communicate through the use of cell phones. This
equipment allows for effective and efficient routing with the net effect of fuel
conservation. In addition, most of these vehicles are now equipped with Global
positioning Satellite (GPS) equipment. These units assist with driver efficiency
in locating work assignments in an effective manner.
